how the hell did reese end up running away to the one region that was on the brink of war?

he can grumble to himself all he likes, but he's here regardless. he might as well pitch in, even if he fully intends to keep himself out of the fight officially. the flooding in the area was vicious enough to claim many homes-- and force Elise Calcifet , his new roommate, out of her own home-- of not just people, but pokemon, too. as the waters started to recede, many found themselves beached or stranded on land, with no idea how to get back home. the sight of so many fish pokemon flopping around uselessly, too tired to make it back to the shoreline, is heartbreaking for reese to witness. he can only remember the marill he helped a while ago, wondering if it's still alright out there.

they're trawling the beach with their gardevoir now, looking to assist any pokemon who need to get back in the water. in doing so, they bump into someone. "oh-- i'm sorry," they apologize. "i wasn't looking where i was going."

Ahh, natural disasters, the aftermath of major battles – the perfect environment to be a vulture. Granted, in her current form she was usually referred to as more of a gremlin, but that did not make Lash any less of a poacher and black market dealer of Pokemon. In fact, one could argue that she changed had to be more of one, since getting into the danger of hunting dangerous ones was a bit more problematic with diminished stature and strength. Especially when she routinely used up her allowance of ‘get yourself into danger to acquire something’ on her hunts for lost time.

So, swiping a few beached Pokemon when none of the other helpers were looking was a no-brainer. Nigh-zero danger too, given that combat was already over.
Well, nigh.
Nothing ever stopped randoms from bumping into her, especially now that she was smaller than most of them. Fortunately, the latest person to do so was not some massive hunk of an avatar or anything like that. Hence, it was just a minor inconvenience, one that saw her drop the plank of wood she had picked up to see if a Pokemon had been buried underneath.

Though, it being nigh-inconsequential did not mean she would just ignore it. If you let others walk over you, you only had yourself to blame! That was how she always thought of these things. “You really should, though! I could have been carrying some already injured baby Pokemon or something! If you can’t help without causing problems, you should not be helping at all!” Plus, fewer volunteers meant fewer people she had to worry about regarding her current side-hustle.
Yes, Lash detested her current form. But she would use it up best as she could, that much was for sure.

reese blinks. it takes a second for it to sink in that they're being chastised, but then a blush settles across their face. "um... r-right. sorry." their gardevoir looks between the two of them, confused at the sudden change in reese's demeanor. the former coordinator shrinks down into themself sheepishly. "d-do you want some help...? to make up for it, i mean."

he's never taken harsh criticism very well, but he's been worse at it ever since he started getting harassed online. even a few years after the worst of it was over, he still can't help but put on his best people pleaser mask to try and mitigate the damage. it doesn't even occur to him that lash might be overreacting, though his gardevoir seems a bit suspicious of the two, eyes narrowed.

Hah. No backbone. Nice. She could work with that. In fact, she loved it. It was worthy of celebration. Getting people to listen to her was pretty nice, especially given how difficult it was with this frame. Made it a lot more rewarding to see someone start stutter. Enough for her to beam happily when they acquiesced. “Ah, well, a little inconvenience like this hardly befits asking for your help to make up. As long as you keep your eyes as open as your mind in the future, that will be fine,” she replied, seemingly putting water under the bridge.

But she also evidently was not done talking. “Buuut since you clearly could use some guidance so you don’t run over more people than you help, I guess you can give me a hand anyway. I saw a toppled-over she a bit further down the beach and I don’t have a psychic type on me. I have something that could clear the debris, but I’d prefer a psychic or something to lift it more gently. In case there are Pokemon trapped underneath or something. Better to not damage them further by roughly handling the obstruction, you know?” Damage. Not injure. But time would tell if they would pick up on that choice of word – or deem it any odder than the mature way she was talking about all this to begin with.

if only reese was more capable of standing up for himself... he might have noticed the oddities here, the suspicious way she phrased the sentence. but all he can do is nod his head vigorously; honestly, even if he hadn't bumped into her, he might have offered to help. he prefers to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, however naive it might be, especially in a place like hoenn.[break][break]

"sure, we can do that easily enough." it's basically what they were already up to in the first place after all. "just show me where and iris will help out." the gardevoir beside him nods as well. her psychic abilities are the whole reason she's out here in the first place, rather than one of his other pokemon. said gardevoir, however, does seem a bit more suspicious of lash than her trainer... they're fiercely protective pokemon, and lash will have to be careful if she doesn't want to invoke its ire.

Fortunately, she had experience. With strong and strong-willed Pokemon. Granted, she was just a poacher. That meant it was her job to capture Pokemon and sell them after. She was not the kind of person that would be tasked with taking care of said strong will. That was for others to do. Something she did not care much for and about. Not that she would ever pass judgment on them anyway, still.

But she still could tell that the Gardevoir was giving her side-eye. Probably would be a bad idea to try anything while that one wasn’t sufficiently distracted. Which was somewhat fine. Lash did not need to do anything ot either of them, anyway. Hence, her chipper attitude did not diminish, even as she started to lead them a bit further down the beach.

“Wonderful. I guess it is really convenient to have a psychic type around sometimes,” she mused, idle thoughts wandering towards the Metagross she had left behind today, mostly to better act out her current persona a bit better. Tiny girl and huge Pokemon could work, often, but it was not the best first impression on a rescue mission.

Naturally, that also meant that she did not exactly put helping these ‘Mons was not her top priority in the slightest. Still though, she would lead them to a genuine scene of where some hut or the like had broken down, with the occasional mewling being audible from beneath. “There, but be careful. They might be injured.”

reese remains oblivious to the slight tension between the girl and his pokemon. he follows after her to where a structure has collapsed, trapping the occupant inside. just by looking at it, he thinks it might have been a shelter for some bidoof at some point, something the beaver pokemon built for itself. how painfully ironic, then, that it could have easily become a tomb.[break][break]

they nod at their gardevoir. "iris, if you would," reese says. the gardevoir puts her hands out, and a gentle blue glow envelopes her. working slowly, she takes apart the collapsed hut piece by piece, starting from the top. the wood gets deposited on the beach, and after a few moments, the psychic type manages to uncover the pokemon inside; not a bidoof, but a skitty, shivering and still wet from the surf. reese kneels down. "oh, you poor thing," they murmur.[break][break]

thankfully, they brought some towels. they dry off the skitty as best they can, then wrap the towel around it to keep it warm. reese stands again, looking at lash. "were there any others you noticed?" he asks, the skitty still in his arms.

Ah, good. The altruist got to do their thing and she didn’t really have to join in. Sure, Lash looked on interestedly, mostly caring about the use of psychic ability for utility like this. But even when she squatted down to observe the saving of the little Skitty, she did not actively engage. Instead, she kept one hand on her knee, apparently thinking.

Mostly, because that boy had things handled anyway and she didn’t have to engage at all. But also because she was debating whether or not this was worth trying anything. At the end of the day, Skitties were cute, but also common. If it was an off-colour one? She might have taken a shot at it. But as was, she really did not have any reason to risk anything. “Good thing we got to it when we did,” she eventually noted, at least pretending to care.
But she was not going to bother playing the kid that got super excited seeing a wet kitten. In fact, she instead looked up when she heard a caw coming from the north, a few moments before her Murkrow came into sight.

The little one circled above them briefly, before flying back north. “Seems like my Murk has found something interesting, one way or another.”

reese hears the caw and angles their head upwards. when lash says her murkrow has found something else, they nod along and gently place the skitty back on the ground. "alright, you stay out of trouble now," they call after the kitten pokemon, which is already scampering away, eager to leave the seaside.[break][break]

iris and reese follow lash to their next target. the gardevoir, of course, stays guarded, but reese does not follow his pokemon's example. "it's a good idea to have your pokemon scout the area from above," he observes. "actually..." in the next moment, he's released another pokemon; a pink ribombee, its scarf fluttering in the wind. "peach, could you take a look overhead and see if you find anyone in need?" he asks politely. the ribombee agrees and flies off to survey the area.

A good idea, huh. Well, that would be a decent observation – if it did not come across as if they had not even thought about that yet. Honestly, that was kind of problematic, as far as Lash was concerned. As far as she could tell, the other was alone in an area that currently had aid workers spread way too thinly. There was a reason why she was focusing on training her Murkow to be a reliable scout. It was almost always necessary to have eyes in the skies, especially in a world as chaotic as theirs.

Heck, she was even fairly confident that she would be able to take on this person and their Guardevoir with a surprise attack if she really put her mind to it.
Lash sighed. It would simply not be worth it all. “You really are carefree about all of this, huh? Bumping into people, not scouting, letting Pokemon scamper off without checking them thoroughly for injury. Are you some kind of disaster tourist?” Not that her own motivations were pure in the slightest. But for one, she never claimed not to be an hypocrite. And for the other, well, she was someone who was maybe a bit too aware of things, given her own situation. She simply could not help but notice was all.

his eyes widen. he looks away guiltily. "i-- i..." several years ago, he might have argued with her. he might have said that any help is better than none, or that he was hardly a trained aid worker who knew what to do. but his own confidence has been shattered into pieces, so he doesn't retort. he just mentally berates himself for not doing more, for not being better. she's right, he thinks. you're not taking this seriously enough.[break][break]

peach's return saves him from having to respond. the ribombee hovers in front of the two, gesturing. internally, reese breathes a sigh of relief. "she found something," they say, a little too quickly. they're eager to follow the fairy type to where a number of pyukumuku lay, having been thrust further up on the beach than they'd like by the flood waters receding.[break][break]

"...iris, if you would." the gardevoir nods, and her eyes glow as she lifts one of the pyukumuku up into the air, floating it over to the water where she deposits it.

Ah. So it actually was something like that. Well, if she had to wager a guess, it probably wasn’t, really. There was another option. One she considered much more likely. After all, a disaster tourist would be someone much more cut-throat and cold than this person seemed to be. No, this was probably just some goody two-shoes that wanted to do good but was just kind of winging it and not doing too well in the process. She had her share of experiences with those, too.

Irksome. But hey, at least the Gardevoir was useful. In a way, it was really picking up his slack, now wasn’t it? Quietly nodding, Lash simply followed along to a situation where neither her nor her Pokemon were really all that useful. Sure, she could have Murkrow help by trying to fly these Pokemon back to the ocean. But she knew full well that they would probably resist, being startled. It just was not worth the hassle. “Well, at least your Pokemon is doing fine work. Guess I can’t really complain since when all is said and done, I am a bit more useless.” A brief laugh followed, clearly a little self-depreciative.

“But hey, at least no one expects much of me, looking like this. So I guess there is no use being any hard on me at all.”

"no one expects much of me, looking like this." for the first time since they met, reese actually looks at lash. normally he avoids eye contact for anything more than a second, and doesn't more than glance at a new acquaintance. but now, while his gardevoir is busy carefully lifting the pyukumuku back into their natural habitat with the aid of her psychokinesis, he pushes his usual shyness to the side.[break][break]

they give her a small, gentle smile. "i know how that feels," they say quietly. "people... judge by appearances. they don't care what's on the inside." their eyes lift to the sky for a moment. "i do, though. i can feel you're more capable than you might seem... i think so, anyway." their gardevoir finishes up her rescue of the poor sea-dwelling pokemon, and returns to reese's side. he folds his arms. "...well, anyway! it looks like this stretch of beach has been cleared off." peach is flitting around trying to find more pokemon to rescue, but it seems she's come up empty-handed.

“Heh,” she sounded, surprisingly affirmative. That phrasing was one she knew all too well, after all. No one expected anything out of her, either. At least not in that sense. They simply saw a little girl that did not have to be taken seriously. The difference was, though, that unlike a cosmically low probability applied here, he actually looked like that because that was who he was. Lash still very much refused thinking of herself as the person she presented.

Which did make it slightly more difficult to remain a bit stand-offish towards this boy. He was saying all the right things. But that made it kind of annoying. Straddling the line between being reassuring and patronizing. A rare occurrence. She was not quite sure how to properly handle it, to be honest. She briefly rubbed the back of her head. “Well, I guess it is difficult not to. We don’t exactly let people in enough to see anyway.” Certainly something she was incredibly guilty of. But she could not change that. She had not chosen this life, ultimately. “Having said that... yes, I think this section should be clear now. At least my eyes in the skies do not have anything to report for now, either.”
